Asian groceries are more and more in demand with an increasing number of people from different Asian countries settling in Australia or studying at university in Australia. TANG The Asian Food Emporium in the CBD of Melbourne was established by a young husband and wife team back in 1987. Elisa and Sio Tang came from Macau and Elisa’s family had run a very successful grocery store there, so she had grown up around the store and helped out after school. Elisa and Sio moved from a small store in Swanston Street to a larger store in China Town in Little Bourke Street, where the business grew as more customers discovered the great range of Asian groceries they stocked. Then they moved to a much bigger store in 1994 at the current location at 185 Russell Street and again expanded when they purchased the coffee shop next store and converted it to a supermarket.
Now stocking the best range of Asian groceries in Melbourne, TANG The Asian Food Emporium underwent a name change from the Great Eastern Food Centre and developed a new image in 2014. Elisa continues to run the store whilst Sio oversees the purchasing and takes trips overseas to source more product. The Tangs appreciate that customers pine for the brands they know from home so get as many popular brands from China, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore and Korea as they can source as well as delicious ingredients for the many Asian cuisines. They also stock a really large selection of snacks, as they know that students love the Asian snacks they are familiar with from home.
The Tang family love the excitement and vibrancy of their store where customers can find both the simplest and most exotic ingredients for cooking Asian food. They like to share their expertise, knowledge and passion for the food they stock with their customers. Call in to check out the fantastic range of Asian groceries, fresh, frozen, packaged and tinned. Open daily from 10am t 11pm.
