This year Chinese New Year will encompass 4 key areas other than Chinatown.
The locations are Docklands, Queensbridge, Queen Victoria Market and the Yarra River.
Docklands will be focussed on evening and weekend events along Harbour Esplanade. You can enjoy Asian Cuisine of a wide variety offered at the many stalls or sit and enjoy spectacular light shows at 888 Collins St while sipping cocktails. The Melbourne Observation Star Wheel will also feature an LED light show for the duration of the New Year Festival.
This space is defined as Southgate Boulevard, Queensbridge St, Freshwater Palace, Crown Casino and the Sandgate bridge leading to Flinders St Station.
On the 27th of January, family friendly activities will commence with the Chinese New Year countdown.
For the duration of the Chinese New Year Festival there will be musical performances, a full ‘Chinese Cultural Village’, dragon boat demonstrations and free Tai Chi lessons for all to enjoy. Celebrations will be capped off with a spectacular closing ceremony at the end of the festival.
Victoria Market, entered via Elizabeth St will commence festivities on Jan 27th with fireworks across the entire historic market sheds creating a cacophony of light and sound to usher out the old and welcome in the new.
With traditional performers from both local and international acts, the markets from Jan 27th until Feb 12th 2017 will provide an exciting and engaging cultural extravaganza. Traditional mythical creatures will appear and you may receive a message of prosperity from the Hongbau wall.
And along Melbourne’s Yarra River Central Precinct, cafés, restaurants, shopping locales and entertainment staging will come alive for Chinese New Year. The banks of the river and the bridges will all feature Chinese New Year lighting installations from the 27th of January. Dragon Boat demonstrations by Dragon Boat Victoria will occur on the 4th and 5th of February.
